Ο Coleman αποφοίτησε απο το Grambling State University (GSU) το 1986,με πτυχίο στη Λογιστική.Παράλληλα έπαιζε American Football στους GSU Tigers.
Μετά την αποφοίτησή του κατετάγη στην αστυνομία,στο Arlington, Texas.Εκεί,ο συναδέλφος του Coleman, Gustavo Arlotta του πρότεινε να πάει στο Metroflex, που ανήκει στον ερασιτέχνη bodybuilder Brian Dobson.Ο Dobson του προσέφερε δωρεάν κάρτα μέλους,εφ όρου ζωής, αν θα του επέτρεπε να προπονήσειτον Coleman για το επερχόμενο διαγωνισμό bodybuilding Mr.Texas εκείνο το έτος(όπου και νίκησε!).Η συνέχεια γνωστή...
